Definition  
A bunion is a structural deformity or dislocation of the bones and the joint of the big toe that shows up as an enlargement or bump around the big toe. The big toe may turn toward the second toe in severe case.
Indications  
A visual bump or protrusion of the big toe joint and possibly swollen and tender tissues in the area under the ball of the foot.  
   
Cause  
   
Bunions are a manifestation of tendons, ligaments, and the supportive structure of the foot not functioning correctly. Some people may have a genetic predisposition to develop bunions. Bunions are caused by a variety foot issues--such as flat feet, excessive motion, abnormal bone structure.
